The European Association of Fertilizer Manufacturers (Fertilizers Europe) has published a press release warning that the European Union risks its food security and strategic autonomy if it does not urgently adopt a structural approach to fertilizers.
At a recent High-Level Dialogue on Fertilizers convened by the European Commission, Fertilizers Europe called for concrete measures to restore industrial competitiveness, which has been severely weakened by high energy and carbon costs. The European association emphasized that fertilizers are essential for agricultural production and that, without a robust industrial base in Europe, dependence on imports and the vulnerability of the entire food chain will increase. Furthermore, it warned that the lack of appropriate measures could exacerbate the risk of production shutdowns or even closures of fertilizer plants in Europe.
Therefore, the association considers it crucial to maintain the free allocation of emission allowances until 2030 and ensure the effective implementation of the CBAM (Common Carbon Market) in order to prevent carbon leakage and an irreversible loss of productive capacity in Europe. It also emphasizes that decarbonization must be carried out in a way that is compatible with industrial competitiveness and the economic viability of farmers, since a poorly designed transition would raise costs throughout the value chain and ultimately harm both European industry and agriculture. The association adds that farmers need direct financial support and proposes that CBAM revenues could contribute to sustaining the agricultural sector without compromising European production.
Fertilizers Europe welcomes the dialogue initiated by the Commission, but demands that the future Fertilizer Action Plan include real and effective measures, and not just declarations of intent.
